101 Days Stroke Free: Hope, Light and the Dark

You ever feel like you’re on the very edge of the dark and the light? Unbalanced and yet in complete control? This is what living with a stroke is like for me and 101 days in I’m really starting to feel the burn. Physically, mentally and spiritually. It’s a hard road I wouldn’t wish on anyone but it’s one I’m tasked with each morning as I wake. I often wonder if I’ll ever regain that spring in my step that I once had. I question what the future holds if another stroke strikes me. And I constantly fuss and worry about my leg and arm in hopes that someday I’ll be ok.

When you have a stroke it’s important to have hope in everything you do. You also have to keep yourself in the bright light, focused on the goodness that life has given you. It can be hard when the two pill a day habit begins to wear on you or the heavy left leg makes you walk odd every so often. When depression sometimes visits you in those quiet moments and you have to find a way to be happy. These are all effects of my stroke. Thankfully I have a great job with some amazing people. I have a loving family who have been supportive and understanding. And I’m slowly starting to open old channels to friends of old and new.

It’s been over three months since the life changing event and I’m still learning. Struggling, learning and pushing. Some days I wish I could just lay in bed and not deal with the life that I’ve got before me. Other days I can’t wait to go out and face the world.

I’ll write more later since the morning arrives in but a few hours. The sun will rise and a new day begins. A chance to get at it all over again.
