In writing and in living there are things that catch you, move you and shake you. Those certain things that catch your heart. I finally sat down and watched “The Neverending Story”. At the ripe old age of 26, you’d think I’d have seen it already, but wonders never cease. Watching this movie is like returning to an age of wonder, an age of imagination once lost. The creatures and features in this movie are spellbinding and so otherworldly it nearly makes me giggle.
Yes, a grown man wrote giggle. Get over it. The point is that the power of imagination has become something forgotten, something ignored. My parents asked me about my written fiction recently saying, “Where do come up with this stuff?” and my answer was more or less a shrug and smile.
But it’s so much more than that. When I hear music I create a scene that dances around my head. When I watched all three Pirates Movies I found myself imagining the story beyond that by a hundred years of a old world meeting the new. When the soundtrack blasts on my Itunes I plot out sword fights and ship battles in my head, the cannons roaring right along with the drums and horns. I never stop imagining.
My friends and fellow coworkers are not immune to this, although they don’t know this (surprise everyone!) but I often imagine writing further into their lives beyond the moments of yesterday and today. Or taking a struggle and making it a short story of my own, borrowing the emotions, feelings and moments they experience. Taking a deeper look into those quiet moments when more than words is shared. Pulling those emotions out of that momentary second and creating a world around that one feeling.
It is both a blessing and a curse to have this neurotic need to write everything both in fiction and non-fiction. I count it among one of my few gifts and I do love it. It’s just hard to explain to people who may not totally understand how much of a total nerd I am and why that probably will never ever change.
Savvy?
