nablowrimo day 11- “This Island Earth”

There are things I wonder about in the late night as the moon rises and the cold air seeps through the windows. As the lone banker’s lamp burns brightly on the desk it highlights my hazel eyes that search the screens before me for answers. Random music plays from the laptop moving from hard rock to romantic ballads meant to inspire. And all through this the dull sound of the keyboard typing away words into text, pounding and pundit-ing prose into form.

It’s 2:08am on a Friday. This scene plays out every night as I plod home from work, my soul and spirit broken. In the writing there is warmth. Hope. Dreams. At times the nonfiction that is my life can be a dreadfully blue read. The reality of the world stage tends to be a downer anymore. Politics has become a powder keg of Kool Aid spouting fanatics. Trying to make a difference through the written word has become old hat.

The world is into videos now. Video Blogs that anyone can create and build a faithful following that worships, comments and favorites. Everyday Joes can do it. And if you’re one of the billions trying, you know what it takes to find your way to get the message you have deeply seeded in your heart out there. It’s has become the albatross that blogging became after time. So many voices written and thrust onto the interwebs.

And so I return to square one. Ground Zero, if you will.

Believing what I believe and knowing what I know at times can be controversial. I live in the age of YouTube videos inspiring hate filled comment sections where the English language becomes a bloodied ax. Where if suddenly you are noticed those ideas, those beliefs, those previous freedoms of speech are suddenly driving people to declare you all kinds of names, terms and statuses that are full of despicable bile sloshed onto keyboards the world over.

I live in a time where my faith, my politics and even my support for certain issues has sent people into tizzies. It has forced me to become less vocal about things because I fear the irrational lack of intellectual debate in the world has flourished to a point where nothing can be discussed without someone rising to the level of a rabid dog at its worst.

The ability to respectfully say, “I agree to disagree”, apparently has experienced an early death and will not be coming back anytime soon. The cognitive function to tolerate has been abused so that no one really understands just what that term means. To tolerate means one thing to one group while the other has twisted it another way.

To say someone is anything less then human for supporting or believing in a cause religious, political or otherwise is absolutely a sign of the end of humanity. To allow ourselves to be drawn into the foaming storm of anger, rage and the end result hate is to ignore the idea of tolerance and understanding.

Because I am a conservative, I’m something terrible. My Christianity automatically syncs me up with every Christian in this world. My Republican leanings have made me someone who doesn’t understand the issues or even research the issues. My pro-life stand has made friendships awkward because there is simply no give or take. My choices in what I believe, subscribe to and follow have somehow made me something other than human.

I make this observation in a general sense of what I read, feel and have experienced in this Modern World. I long have suspected we are headed down a terrible path lead by extremists from both sides and that the idea of a moderate has been blown away by members on both sides of any of the groups.

Religiosity has become a stain on humanity. Politics has become a “you’re right” and “you’re wrong” world. The subscription to taking stands on issues and ideas has become a battlefield. The middle ground has been long abandoned, a graveyard of understanding and cooperation.

Is there hope? Is there some way to right this cracked mirror that has become our world?

That is the question of our time.
